Louis is a retired associate professor in paediatrics at University of Cape Town and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where he trained. As a paediatrician he has special interests in respiratory disease, neuromuscular disorders and critical care, and has done research and published in these fields. He taught health professionals at under and postgraduate levels and now teaches part-time in the field of health professional education.
He has been a health and human rights activist for more than 3 decades and was a founder member of the National Progressive Primary Health Care Network, which was formed during the struggle against apartheid to campaign for a future health system based on PHC. He is also a founder member of the South African PHM circle.
