Thursday 20 March (Day Six)

7.00 - 8.00 Breakfast
8.00 - 8.30 Evaluation of Day Five
8.30 - 10.30 Trade and Health. Presented by Amit Sen Gupta

After a brief background, linking to the earlier discussion of globalisation, we will get into the specific issues -- WTO and its structure, dynamics, health related agreements. We will examine IPRs as a concept -- in terms of its ability or otherwise to actually promote innovation and then look in some more detail at TRIPS and GATS. Two more issues that are of regional/local concern -- 1) Medical Tourism as it is being promoted very aggressively in India; 2) The Indian Patents Act, given its importance in impacting on generic drug production in the region will also be addressed.

10.30 - 11.00 Break
11.00 - 12.00 Reflections on PHM globally.. Led by David Legge

PHM has a huge contribution to make to the struggle for health. We will achieve 'health for all' when people in their millions say no to rising inequalities; say no to unfair globalisation; say yes to equitable access to decent health care; say yes to creating a healthy sustainable world. PHM's first priority is to work with the people who are denied decent health care, who are forced to live in risk laden environments. However, we are also working to build solidarity across communities, across the barriers of nationality, class, caste and gender. Such solidarity can enable people in the US and India to stand together over issues such as intellectual property rights and fair trade.

The purpoose of IPHU is to build PHM but what is PHM? Is it an organisation or is it a social movement or perhaps it is an organisation trying to build a social movement? What are the implications of these different organisational models for how we work?

The purpose of this session is to review the work of PHM globally, where we have come from and how we are currenly working so that the projects and activities at the local level and those at the national and global levels can complement, can mutually reinforce each other.
